This quote is often attributed to Winston Churchill, who many consider the greatest Prime Minister that Great Britain ever had. His primary responsibility was to ensure the safety and sovereignty of Great Britain during World War II. As a consequence of his military and political prowess, he protected the interests of Western Europe at a crucial time in history. In his biography, we can see the changes he made as a leader in response to encroaching enemies, changing technologies, and the fluctuating political atmosphere of his day.
Each of us has a calling for the life we have been given and the shadow cast by Churchill looms large. In light of his quote, and the leadership he displayed in the theatre to which he was called, we can apply similar principles to our own lives. With that in mind, this is primarily written for leaders or aspiring business leaders. We have seen many changes thrust upon organizations by globalization, technology changes, politics, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Navigating this type of change requires leaders who are open to:
An honest assessment of themselves, and
A desire to make the changes necessary for the success of their companies.
Lasting change happens individually by leaders who are the key to helping organizations morph to meet the needs of their customers in an ever-changing world.
One of the challenges for individual leaders is learning what we need to change about ourselves. Seeking feedback is one way to do this. Often, this feedback is a bit more glowing than we would like, particularly if given by someone who reports to us. A more objective way to gain an accurate view of our capabilities as leaders is through assessments. When appropriately used with a coach, these can provide a clear path and a cadence of accountability for change.
